PaRappa in particular is famous for being the first rhythm game ever created. They’re cut-outs because all the characters were 2D in their games. After the melting snow platform section down the river, on the right side you can see two Bots by a door with a Bot further on in a lab coat. This refers to 1996’s Resident Evil on the PS1, developed by Capcom. The two characters are Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, while the lab coat Bot is series villain Albert Wesker. The door is a reference to show the game hid loading times, by showing a shot of a door opening to disguise the load between rooms.
Astro’s Playroom
In every level of the game, a little piece of PlayStation’s history is hidden in many nooks and crannies. Whether it’s more recognizable products like the Memory Cards, or historic handheld devices like the PlayStation Portable, they all get stored in the Labo as a form of nostalgic lookback. For example, one level of SSD Speedway gives Astro a mini gun to fight against a swarm of enemies, and one level in GPU Jungle gives Astro a bow for some ranged combat. Enemies themselves are either simplistically designed slimes, enemy robots, or spring-action bird things that can take out Astro with a surge of electricity. What caught me off guard the most was the hub area, CPU Plaza, having surprise platforming sections along its walls that spring to life instantly. [newline]However, the gameplay highlights in Astro’s Playroom are the special suits of the four areas.

This references 2010’s Heavy Rain on PS3, developed by Quantic Dream. In it, a serial killer known as the Origami Killer uses long periods of rain to drown his victims, and uses origami as his calling card. In the second mud pit of Gusty Gateway you’ll find a Bot carrying several crates while being surrounded by crabs.

Hit the flower to cause another tower to appear, which has this puzzle piece on it. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – From the next checkpoint, go to the left to find a cave area with this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – When you reach the area with the monkey bars, you can reach this puzzle piece to the left side of the second one. Artifact 2/3 “Playstation Portable” – After riding the rotating platform, there is a switch on the other side which creates a lily pad platform back to the right.
The mandatory interaction area in this level required the use of the touchpad, namely to flick repeatedly in the direction you wish to travel to move the ball. I managed fine at first, but the muscles in my hand rapidly began to exhaust before I had even completed the area. There is no way to turn the touchpad controls off, nor is there an alternate control method. I handed the controller to my sister asking her to do the area for me, with the expectation this would be a one-off. Or at least some more replayable sections for things I actually enjoyed. Luckily, Sony seems intent on reliving their past in more than one way with the launch of the PS5.
At the end you’ll find an Artefact, as well as a Bot hanging upside-down from the ceiling by a web. This is a reference to 2018’s Spider-Man, developed by Insomnia Games. Its sequel, Miles Morales, would be a launch title alongside Astro’s Playroom. Miscellaneous Trophies in Astro Playroom reward unique actions and challenges‚ such as specific jumps or interactions. These fun‚ creative achievements add variety to your trophy hunt experience. Holding the cross, Astro will launch lasers that will allow him to soar into the air.

It takes you through the vibration, adaptive triggers, touchpad, motion sensor and microphone. But once you do dive in, there’s no shortage of joy that comes from how Team Asobi has translated in-game surfaces, objects, and movement into different DualSense sensations. As the PlayStation pack-in title for the PlayStation 5, Astro’s Playroom is a short and masterful experience. While it was originally just a tech demo for the DualSense, it offers a colorful and expertly crafted platforming game to tie in all of that controller’s features. The T. Rex makes many other appearances in Astro’s Playroom, including the Dreams reference in Renderforest and some of the screens in the PlayStation Labo area. In the PlayStation Labo area, the wall skirting just above the floor contain references to various PlayStation hardware ports. In g28 , you can spot the PSP, PS Vita and PSP Go port and button layouts from the top and bottom of the systems.
The slight downside is that Astro’s Playroom is concise, as completing the game will take you an hour and a half. However, there are many collectibles to obtain, and Team Asobi has added free content updates. If you ever wanted to earn a platinum trophy, this is the game to do it. Fortunately, Astro’s Playroom has dynamic jumping, which means that holding down X will result in a much bigger jump than just tapping X.
